“The great medical doctor and statistician Hans Rosling used to say that the world can’t be understood without numbers, but that it can’t be understood through numbers alone either. Data science deals with data and the insights and inferences we can extract from them, but data scientists also need to remind themselves that very often there are human beings behind those data. How do our analyses, algorithms, or tools affect other people? What are the consequences of the technologies we create? What are our moral duties as scientists, analysts, or communicators? How can we contribute to human flourishing and well-being? Those are questions that I think we all need to prioritize.”
